Important points about Disco!
- Disco was developed out of the subgenre Philly Soul, which emerged in the late 60’s. It was slicker and more commercial than the soul genre. Disco was a form of escapism in the 70’s, creating a genre that was fun, playful and incredibly dance driven.
- Philly Soul launched a significant rise of white artists who also started to make Soul, dubbed “Blue Eyed Soul”, a gateway to the commercial Disco genre.
- Disco had a lot of push back due to the portrayal of white male masculinity happening in Rock and Roll at the time. Disco offered a more feminine side, and embraced dancing, fun, and the LGBTQ+ community.
- Disco was club music in the 70’s geared towards dancing. Emphasis on bass and drum beats.
- Simple vocal melody, complex rhythmically instrumental lines.
- Some Disco artists are: ABBA, Donna Summer, Bee Gees and KC and the Sunshine Band.
- Instrumentation: Rock band set up: (bass, drums, guitar, vocals), emphasis on vocals and a catchy melodic passage, (sometimes) horns, and synthesizers.
